I think it would be depressing to find out just how little power my stock Miata with 208k miles is making.

Braineack

5th October 2010, 09:10

you can still drive up and hang out; the drive through MD countryside was kinda nice. And you can see your dear friend Lars again!

I think it would be depressing to find out just how little power my stock Miata with 208k miles is making.

Last time we did this, I dyno'ed my pure stock Miata, and was really impressed with how well the graphs looked (A/F, torque lines). Yeah, there was no power, but it was pretty cool nonetheless.

Got a new ECU chip in this time, so it'll be great to see the changes.

Well after getting more gas I had another fuel leak where the injectors meet the head. I have to fix that tomorrow.

shuiend

30th October 2010, 17:04

So the new injectors I got are about a quarter inch shorter then stock injectors. So I threw in some old tantops that I had and they work, well they are missing the pintle caps and I have a vacuum leak. On the plus side I let the engine warm up and changed the coolant, no water or gas in it, also no metal flakes. So once I get my fuel issue sorted out I should be good to go.

I am thinking about getting a stand alone ECU for my Miata. I am thinking my build would be for ITA, PTE, TTE. (so no boost) I think the whole stand alone ECU thing is a bit overwhelming to me. There are so many, and they range from $600ish to $2000ish and up.

Does anyone have any advice? Anyone have any experience?

Do I NEED dyno time to make this thing work or can I do it with street time?

Thanks!!!

Megasquirt 3 with the MS3X expander board is the best you can do for the cheapest amount of money. I highly recommend that you head over to miataturbo.net and just read around in the ECU section. In NoVA you will have 2 people running MS3 and probably another dozen running some sort of MS variant. Dyno time is not required, but it can help get a better tune. Talk to Braineack about possibly having him building you one.

Braineack

16th November 2010, 11:13

Lars, the DIYPNP is technically cheaper and easier...

You want this:
http://www.diyautotune.com/diypnp/docs1_5/main_assembly.html

how to assemble:
http://www.diyautotune.com/diypnp/docs1_5/main_assembly.html

how to setup for a 94-95 miata:
http://www.diyautotune.com/diypnp/apps/n76/usdm-mazda-miata-9495-18bp-mt.html

you're talking under $500 (with AIT sensor) for a full PNP standalone ECU, I'd spring the extra $38 for the seq. injection module. You just need about 2 hours for assembly/programming.

The MS3 + MS3X requires a custom built harness. A pre-assembled MS3 V3.57 board with Ms3X would cost $640 and like I said you still need to build a harness to install it.

While I still think the MS3 and expansion board is better, the value of the MS-II with the DIYPNP package is too good to pass up for most installs.

davecarama

19th November 2010, 13:47

I have to say, I am swaying to the MS unit. BUT I have to start focusing... I do not need this to get my license and get on track. I need to stop getting distracted and do the minimum to finish my car.
Seat, belts, fire extinguisher, and fuel test port... roughly $600

Comp school

Then steering wheel, Dyno time and leakdown/compression check (to figure out the health of the motor), revalve shocks... and so on.

I need to get a log book first, then a license, then I can start tinkering.

So I was driving from Manassas out to the track yesterday, I took 66 west to 17 north. Once on 17 almost immediately I get stopped by a trooper in the middle of the road. They checked my fuel to insure no "off-road" diesel, checked the weight with the registration (I need to change the weight on my registration it turns out) and they were checking licenses. After I finished with them, I drove off, got down the road about 1/4 mile and my radar detector (that was sitting on the dash) started going off........lol. I forgot to put it away after my last trip out west.......

I have prime seats for this already.

I live in a building right next to the course and am over 10 floors off the ground. We will be able to see the cars coming around camden yards. It will be awesome.

We may be throwing several parties that weekend. Miata owners get first priority after friends :)

Random question for the spec miata guys. Do you run heater cores?

I am debating if I want to pull mine or not in my car. Basically now that I am living in the south and not DDing the car I really do not think I need it.

NAautoxer

8th December 2010, 09:20

they are required to, lars...

Wow Alan, that stinks! i am confused about the weight on the registration? how would you even go about changing that? also interesting they checked your fuel..

Weekend Warrior

8th December 2010, 10:32

Lars,
Many guys pull them if they fail, others just bypass them if they fail. I keep mine because they are nice to have when racing in the rain.

Joey,
They were looking for off road diesel. Turns out it is substantially less by about .20/gal. Many diesel guys use this illegally. I have to go to DMV to change registration.

EMRA's Wreckerboy

8th December 2010, 13:23

Heater cores weigh little, and operating ones are a big advantage when racing in the rain against those who do not have them (says the guy who qualified 7th in a rain session earlier this year, when he had been qualifying in the 20's at that point).

want an E250 with the V8. cargo van. make it my own "shaggin waggin"...

EMRA's Wreckerboy

27th December 2010, 14:05

If you are shopping for a used cargo van just keep in mind that "used" in those vehicles generally translates as "completely used up." There are exceptions - look for vans that came from the fleets of larger companies where maintenance is usually better.

Otherwise, if you are looking for an E250 consider an E350 window van from one of the rental car companies. Avis, for example, uses E350 XLTs (full interior) as shuttle vehicles in their parking lots to move their employees around and usually sells them when they have less than 20K miles on them. My '04 E350 was one of those, I purchased it when it was less than a year old and had 17K on it. I've put another 35K on it since then with zero reliability issues.

NAautoxer

27th December 2010, 14:52

thanks EMRA. i know exactly what you mean about being used up. there have been some decent workhorses in the area and i plan on buying in a few months and looking for companies that are going out of business or old fleet vehicles.

i have been back and forth on the windows or cargo and i think i'm going to go with cargo. with what we'll be doing with it, sleeping in it, i think it'll work out better. i have my companies as long as they let me borrow it. :)

We've got an 08 Sienna. Both the Sienna and the Odyssey rock. Consumer Reports gave the edge to the Toyota a couple years back. Either one are top dogs.

Just make sure you get auto side doors. It's a necessity!

We had the same discussion and ultimately decided to let powertrain availability be the deciding factor (I have a V10 truck) over the windows/lack of windows thing.

We ended up with a window van and have found it to be much more flexible and livable than a cargo. The primary reason is the interior - with a full interior the truck is quiet and comfortable. When we need to haul sh*te (race weekends, trips to Lowe's Racing Supply, etc.) the seats come out in about five minutes and a tarp goes down to protect the carpeting. The only drawback to this is storage of the benches while the van is in use without them. The windows are heavily tinted, and we've camped in the back of ours on more than one occasion. A sleeping bag/air mattress combo fits nicely in the 12 passenger/SWB truck with everything except the front bench removed.

YMMV, good luck with the hunt for a clean truck!

NAautoxer

29th December 2010, 08:38

ours will be for only camping, which is one of the reasons i want a cargo. i like the idea of the V10, too. :) i missed my chance on an 02 diesel extended cargo last week. :( should have jumped but we don't have the money yet.. another good thing about the cargo is i can "customize" with shelving etc for parts and personal/car supplies.

unless you think root beer is gross, wonder if they'd make me a miller lite float

i think carrie has gotten to you. she doesn't like rootbeer either.

i usually get the BBQ chicken wrap. which used to be $7. now it's like $10.50. but nothing has changed, only the times. :( didn't know we all got rich in the last few years..

Yes, karting and food will happen, on Saturday 1/15. Come out and have fun beating me at racing when I'm another year older, good for self esteem! lol =) RR's fake meat is why they rock, all burgers can be had with a veggie burger.

there real meat is fake/frozen. i remember when the first opened.. $7 "gourmet" burgers that tasted great.. sadly america is greedy. but that's life. still like my chicken wrap. :) 15th you say? hmm. i really SHOULD work on the miata..

Red Robin has to pay for all the balloons they give away dont they?

I mean hell, Chiptole is expensive and I don't hear people complaining. The burrito is just a bunch of rice and beans filler and you pay something retarded for it. And what like $5 for 2oz. of gauc and a handful of chips?

Restaurants constantly increase prices to see the limit in which their fat customers will continue to pay.

That doesn't look like a lot of food for $14.00...you got ripped off.

One plus to living in the middle of nowhere is that food at restaurants is still kinda OK priced. We have a bunch of town restaurants that are locally owned and it's great. I can get soup and a sandwich for $5.00. Used to get a spag dinner w/salad and bread for $10.00 - that place has changed hands and the new owner is a weiney!

i dunno. usually when i go to chipotle i pay like $6 for a huge burrito that i can't finish... red robin has to pay for those "bottomless fries" or "empty calories and fat" that they have.

elevation burger is a niche market though. anything that is "earthy" is more expensive, and rightfully so. that actually looks like a REAL fresh hamburger, instead of a frozen patty which is what people like Fuddruckers and Red Robin use. i'd prefer five guys over both..
