Science Machine | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (2024)

The Science Machine is the first crafting bench players will have access to in both Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together.

While the Science Machine provides a variety of necessary items for players to prototype and craft, players will shortly have to upgrade to an Alchemy Engine and will later need to upgrade to the Shadow Manipulator, as these crafting benches tend to provide better gear including Weapons and Armour.

When it comes to the Science Machine, players will only need to “prototype” recipes once, essentially learning how to craft the item upon crafting it the first time and will not need to come back to the Science Machine in order to craft these items again.

Players will also receive 15 Sanity upon prototyping any item for the first time, though this cannot be said for Wickerbottom as she already has the knowledge to craft all Science Machine recipes upon spawning into The Constant. Speaking of Wickerbottom, if Wickerbottom stands next to a Science Machine, she will gain access to all Alchemy Engine recipes as it will act as a tier-2 science station.

The following guide will take you through everything you need to know about the Science Machine, what items you should prototype upon spawning gaining access to the Science Machine, the uses of said items and the items you can wait until later to craft.

Science Machine | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (1)

HOW DO YOU CRAFT THE SCIENCE MACHINE?

The Science Machine recipe is knowledge that every character has upon spawning into The Constant.

Though, players will have to craft themselves an Axe (1 Twigs and 1 Flint) and Pickaxe (2 Twigs and 2 Flint) in order to obtain the required resources to craft it.

Players will need to collect4 Logs, 4 Rocks and1 Gold Nugget in order to craft the Science Machine, requiring them to locate a few Trees and Boulders that have gold veins in them.

Players will want to craft the Science Machine in the first few days in order to craft items, though if players wish to not waste the resources or are worried about placing the Science Machine in a bad area, they can use a Hammer (6 Cut Grass, 3 Rocks and 3 Twigs) to salvage some of the resources they use to craft the Science Machine.

While players may feel like crafting a Hammer is a waste of time and resources, let it be known that the Hammer is an extremely useful tool, especially if players are hoping to knock down Pig Houses in order to farm out resources like Pig Skin.

Note that players will need a Science Machine in order to craft the Hammer, making it semi-paradoxical.

It should also be noted that in theShipwreckedDLC, a Science Machine can become flooded, essentially making it unusable due to malfunctioning.

WHAT ITEMS CAN I CRAFT USING A SCIENCE MACHINE?

When it comes to crafting a Science Machine players will gain access to a total of 25 items.

Items will include recipes from the Tools, Survival, Food, Science, Fight, Structures, Refine, Magic and Dress Tabs.

If players have enough of the resources it takes to craft a new item from any of the mentioned Tabs the Tab will glow and have an exclamation point beside it.

The following are all of the items players can craft:

TOOLS

Tools include items that can be used to affect the world around a player. Players will not be able to collect certain resources without them.

SHOVEL

Requiring2 Twigs and2 Flint to prototype, the Shovel is a Tool that allows players to dig up Plants, Graves, Rabbit Holes, Moleworms and Stumps that can be located around the world.

Shovels are most notable for their ability to transport Saplings, Cut Grass, Berry Bushes and will be necessary for Maxwell players to spawn in his Shadow Diggers.

Shovels are a necessity for players who are hoping to start building a base as it will allow them to allocate important resources in hopes of having them be accessible all year round.

It should be noted that if players transplant Grass Tufts or Berry Bushes they will have to fertilize them using resources such as Rot, Manure or Guano, while Saplings will regrow on their own without any problem.

Players will have 25 uses for each Shovel, essentially consuming 4% of the durability at a time, though players should also note that if they use a Shovel as weapon they will also consume a single use.

Shovels only deal 17 damage, so players should avoid using one as a weapon.

PITCHFORK

Requiring2 Twigs and2 Flint to prototype, the Pitchfork is a Tool that allows players to dig up Turf in order to place it elsewhere.

Moving around Turf is most usually a completely cosmetic choice, though players should be aware that if they keep their natural Turf in certain areas, such as the Forest, Lureplants will begin spawning in Spring.

Lureplants can be managed and normally will not bother players, though I personally like to make farms out of them, especially when I’m playing Wickerbottom.

Lureplants can be completely avoided if players place enough craftable Turfs.

Players should also note that only some birds will land on certain Turf, though this is not usually a hinderance due to how close most biomes are to each other.

InHamlet (HAM) the BFB will not be able to spawn on Deep Rainforest or Gas Rainforest Turf, as these Turfs are considered to have “canopies”

Similar to Lureplants inDon’t StarveReign of Giants (RoG)andDon’t Starve Together (DST), players will want to place craftable Turf in order to avoid Puddles from spawning inShipwrecked (SW). The only issue is that craftable Turf can still be flooded, making them only mediocre in comparison to craftable Turf inROG.

Also inSW, players will only be able to plant Coffee Plants and Elephant Cactus on Ashy, Magma or Volcanic Turfs, though players will still be able to swap out the Turf after these plants are Planted, though not recommended if players wish to make any alterations to their farm.

It should be noted that players will not be able to dig up Deep Rainforest and Gas Rainforest Turf inHAMand will instead lose their Pitchfork’s complete durability. Though this is true, players will still want to locate either in order to plant Nettles.

In theHamlet (HAM) DLC, players will also have access to Stone Road Turf which essentially boosts all player’s movement speed by 30% when walking on it.

HAMMER

Requiring3 Rocks,3 Twigs and6 Cut Grass(or2 Ropes in theDon’t Starve base game) Hammers are an essential tool for players to destroy player-made Structures and generated Structures such as Pig Houses, Walls, Mermhouses, Ornate Chests and the Ancient Pseudoscience Station found in the Ruins.

Players will also want to use Hammers to break down Bones for Bone Shards, Mermheads for Fish, Pig Heads for Twigs and Pig Skin inDon’t Starve Together. Players will see an alternative skin for Pig Heads inShipwreckedbeing the Wildbore Headsm these will also drop Pig Skin and Bamboo instead of Twigs.

In most cases, players will use Hammers to break down Structures that are generated naturally in order to obtain their resources, though as a player becomes more comfortable with the game, players will want to begin moving around their placed Structures in order to make a nice looking base.

I should caution, holding a Hammer in your hand while staying in base often leads to a player destroying their belongings, so please be careful and always make sure to unequip your Hammer when you are not using it.

It should be noted that inDon’t Starve Together and Reign of Giants, players will not need a Science Machine to prototype a Hammer.

RAZOR

Requiring2 Twigs and2 Flint to prototype, the Razor is an item that will often be used by Wilson and Webber to shave their beards, but is also required for players to shave Beefalo for their Beefalo Wool while they are sleeping.

Beefalo Wool is a very important resource for players to collect, especially as they prepare for Winter as it can be used for Dress Tab clothing that keeps players warm, but is more often used as a fuel source for their Firepits and Endothermic Firepits as it provides 25% fuel and essentially costs the player nothing.

In theHamletDLC, players will be using the Razor to shave Hedges for 1 Clippings.

In most cases players will only need to craft a single Razor, as they can leave it by the Beefalo herd they are regularly shaving, though players will want a second Razor in their base if they are playing a bearded player.

There is no rush on crafting a Razor, though I would strongly recommend crafting one as soon as you locate a large Beefalo herd.

FEATHER PENCIL

The Feather Pencil requires 1 Twig,1 Charcoal and1 Jet Feather to prototype and is only useful for drawing items onto Mini Signs in the base game of Don’t Starve.

Players must place the item that they wish to draw in front of the Mini Sign then use the Feather Pencil on the Mini Sign to complete the drawing.

InDon’t Starve Together, players will also be able to craft the Cookbook, which records all of their crafted Crock Pot recipes, the Map Scroll, which allows players to share their map with other players and all of Wigfrid’s Songs.

POCKET SCALE(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Pocket Scale requires1 Log,1 Cut Stoneand1 Gold Nugget to prototype and its only use is to preemptively weigh Fish before placing the Fish on the Fish Scale-O-Matic or to see whether or not the Crabby Hermit will accept it.

Players will not need a Pocket Scale in most cases as weighing Fish is not an absolute necessity, though players will rejoice in knowing that the Pocket Scale has a fairly high durability coming in with 100 uses.

SHEARS (HAMLET)

Shears require2 Twigsand2 Iron Ore to prototype and can trim Tall Grass, Hedges, Hanging Vines, Creeping Vines and Spear Traps.

Most notably, Shears will drop more items than just using a Machete or a Razor, gaining almost double the effectiveness for each.

LIGHT

Light items do as the name suggests… provide light!

ENDOTHERMIC FIRE(REIGN OF GIANTS, SHIPWRECKED & DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

Endothermic Fire require3 Cut Grass and2 Nitre to prototype and are the Summer equivalent of a Campfire.

Endothermic Fires will cool down a player while lit and only should be used during Summer to protect from Overheating. If the outside weather is too cold players will freeze when standing by an Endothermic Fire.

BOAT TORCH(SHIPWRECKED)

The Boat Torch requires2 Twigsand1 Torchto prototype and is necessary for players to have light when riding a Boat.

Boat Torches can be applied onto almost all boats except for Log Rafts and Rafts, having 1 minute and 45 seconds of burn time.

If players wish to save the Boat Torch’s fuel, they can turn it off, only turning it back on when they need it.

BOAT LANTERN(SHIPWRECKED)

The Boat Lantern requires2 Twigs, 1 Empty Bottleand1 Fireflyto prototype.

The Boat Lantern acts similar to a Boat Torch, being able to be attached to any Boats other than the Log Raft or Raft, though it provides light for a longer amount of time, being 7 minutes and 48 seconds.

Unlike the Boat Torch, players can refuel a Boat Lantern using Bioluminescence or Fireflies.

CORK CANDLE HAT (HAMLET)

The Cork Candle Hat requires4 Corkand2 Iron Ore to prototype and will serve as a light source, providing a light radius that is a bit smaller than a Torch.

The Cork Candle Hat can be refuelled with Cork and uses a player’s Head slot, allowing them to use their hands while in the dark.

A Cork Candle Hat also provides players with 20% wetness resistance.

TREASURE HUNTING (HAMLET)

The Treasure Hunting Tab is an exclusive Tab for Hamlet (HAM)

BALL PEIN HAMMER

The Ball Pein Hammer requires2 Iron Ores and1 Twig to prototype and provides players with the ability to get Lost Relics or Gold Nuggets from statues found in the ruins or on the surface.

Players must use a Ball Pein Hammer before mining the statue or the resources will be destroyed.

GOLD PAN

The Gold Pan requires2 Iron Oresand1 Hammerto craft and can be used in Sparkling Pools to get Gold Dust.

Science Machine | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (2)

NAUTICAL(SHIPWRECKED and where noted HAMLET)

The Nautical Tab is specific to theShipwrecked (SW) DLC and provides players with any items that have to do with Boats and sailing.

ROW BOAT (+ HAMLET)

The Row Boat requires4 Vinesand3 Boards to craft and provides players with the ability to sail.

The Row Boat has 250 durability and can be fitted with boat attachments and when it moves it will lose 5.76 durability per second, lasting for around 3 days if the player does not crash into any other objects.

The Row Boat is considered the best option for players to sail around in, especially because it provides players with 6 sailing speed.

If a Row Boat is damaged or used it can be repaired using a Boat Repair Kit or the Sea Yard.

BOAT REPAIR KIT(+ HAMLET)

The Boat Repair Kit requires2 Boards,2 Stinger and2 Ropes to prototype and allows players to repair their boat by 150 HP.

THATCH SAIL

The Thatch Sail requires 4 Palm Leaves, 2 Bamboo and2 Vinesto prototype and provides players with a 20% speed boost when sailing, being the lowest speed boost players can receive from a sail.

Not only does the Thatch Sail have the lowest speed boost, but it also has the lowest durability, only lasting 2 days.

BOAT CANNON

The Boat Cannon requires6 Coconut,5 Logs and4 Gunpowder to prototype and can be attached to any boat with a Boat’s light slot.

A Boat Cannon is an extremely useful item for players to have as players will be able to them to deal 100 damage, consuming 6.66% durability per each shot.

Essentially players will only get 15 use out of each Boat Cannon.

SEA TRAP

The Sea Trap requires4 Palm Leaves,2 Empty Bottles and1 Jellyfish to prototype and are essentially the water version of a regular Trap.

Sea Trap, like regular Traps, have only 8 uses and are used to catch Wobsters.

TRAWL NET

The Trawl Net requires3 Ropeand2 Bamboo to prototype and are used for catching marine life and items that are found on the water bed.

Trawl Nets are equipped in the same slot as Sails on boats, forcing the player to paddle.

A player will collect a new item every 100 units, reducing the player’s movement speed by about 2.8% up to a maximum of 25%.

Players can acquire items such as Mussels, consuming the spawn point, Jellyfish, Rainbow Jellyfish, Wobsters, Seaweed, Bioluminescence and have the chance to spawn a Quaken.

Additionally, players have the chance to receive items that are sunken in the Deep Ocean, which are indicated by bubbles, only having 2 days at a time to get them.

Trawl Nets must be detached manually before they reach full capacity, the capacity being 9 and upon detaching the Trawl Net will be destroyed, sinking to the bottom of the ocean.

If players fail to collect items before the Trawl Net sinks, which happens 90 seconds after detaching, all living creatures collected will die and float to the surface, allowing players to collect their dead variants.

The following are the items players can receive and chances players have to obtain them.

SPYGLASS

The Spyglass requires1 Empty Bottle,1 Pig Skin and1 Gold Nugget to prototype.

When equipped, players will be able to reveal a cone-shaped portion of the map in the direction where players click their Right Mouse button.

While the Spyglass has 5 uses, players will receive a different amount of range of sight based on the time of day, whether they are on boats or if they are currently in Hurricane Season.

SUPER SPYGLASS

The Super Spyglass requires1 Spy Glass,1 Eye of the Tiger Sharkand1 Gold Nugget to prototype.

Players will be able to see the double the map reveal they would normally get from a Spyglass though players run the risk of the Super Spyglass being blown away during Strong Winds.

Note that the player doesn’t receive range reduction when standing on a boat.

CAPTAIN HAT

The Captain Hat requires1 Seaweed,1 Bone Shard and1 Straw Hat to prototype and will cause all boats to lose their durability at half the speed, though being hit with a wave will still deal full damage.

Players can wear the Captain Hat for a maximum of 2 days.

PIRATE HAT

The Pirate Hat requires2 Bone Shards,2 Silk and1 Rope to prototype and will increase the Map reveal when a player in sailing.

The Pirate Hat also provides players with 20% water resistance and will restore 2 Sanity per minute.

Similar to the Captain Hat, the Pirate Hat has a durability of 2 days.

Players will need the Pirate Hat to craft the Piratihatitator.

LIFE JACKET

The Life Jacket requires3 Empty Bottles,2 Vines and2 Cloth to prototype and will save players from drowning in the Ocean if their boat is destroyed/reaches 0 durability.

Upon dying a player’s screen will turn black and the player will be provided with enough Cut Grass and Logs to make a Log Raft.

FEATHER LITE SAIL

The Feather Lite Sail requires4 Doydoy Feathers,2 Bamboo and2 Rope to prototype.

The Feather Lite Sail has the second highest movement speed boost, coming in at 40%, but has the lowest durability in tandem with the Thatch Sail, coming in at 2 days.

BUOY

The Buoy requires4 Bamboo,2 Bioluminescenceand1 Empty Bottle to craft and can be placed in the Ocean as a waypoint or to provide as much light as a Torch without the need to be refueled.

Buoys can be destroyed by a Hammer or by being hit by a Dragoon Egg during a Volcanic Eruption.

CORK BOWL CANOE (HAMLET EXLUSIVE)

The Cork Bowl Canoe requires4 Cork and 1 Ropeto prototype and has both a Sail Slot and a Light Slot.

Cork Bowl Canoes have 180 seconds of use, having a durability of 80 and have a sailing speed of 4.

Science Machine | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (3)

SURVIVAL

Survival items have a lot of variants, though many seem like Tools. You’ll see…

BUG NET

Requiring4 Twigs,2 Silk and1 Rope to prototype, the Bug Net is an item that is necessary for players to craft Bee Boxes.

Bug Nets can be used to catch Bees, Butterflies, Mosquitos as well as Fireflies.

As mentioned, the Bug Net will mostly be used for catching Bees for Bee Boxes, though players will also want to catch Butterflies if they want to transplant Flowers, Mosquitos if they want to make the Sanguine Experiment during the Hallowed Nights event inDon’t Starve Together, and Fireflies in order to craft Miner’s Hats, Pumpkin Lanterns, Boat Lanterns inShipwrecked (SW)or Winona’s Spotlight inDST.

In Shipwrecked players will want to use a Bug Net, called a Net, in order to capture Jellyfish, Rainbow Jellyfish, Bioluminescence and Poison Mosquitoes.

Players will not need a Bug Net until they are planning on crafting a Bee Box, realistically, thoughShipwreckedplayers may need to rely on one in order to get quality resources.

FISHING ROD

Requiring2 Twigs and2 Silkto prototype, the Fishing Rod can be used to catch Fish and Eels that are found in Ponds.

Realistically players will not need a Fishing Rod as it primarily provides players with an extra food source, though players should note that Ponds freeze over in Winter, making this food source unreliable.

Players can avoid using a Fishing rod on Ponds as Frogs will also spawn from the Ponds, essentially providing players with food, other than at Night. That being said, players should fish at Night simply because Frogs will not spawn, Frogs being fairly dangerous to players since they attack players frequently and will cause them to drop items.

InShipwrecked players will receive Tropical Fish from Shoals and Tidal Pools and Crocodogs from Shoals.

Fishing Rods can be bought for 10 Oincs inHamlet and can be used to retrieve sunken Lost Relics when in the Lily Pond Biome.

Fishing Rods are the most important inDon’t Starve Togetheras they are required to receive Crumpled Packages that have both the Fashion Goggles Blueprint as well as the Desert Goggles Blueprint that will allow players to see in the Oasis Desert during Summer. It should be noted that players will only be able to fish in the Oasis during Summer.

The Fishing Rod is an item I don’t normally prototype unless I absolutely need it.

Fishing Rods only have 10 uses.

BIRD TRAP

Bird Traps require4 Silkand3 Twigs and can be used to catch Birds that land on them.

Each Bird Trap has 8 uses and are not absolutely required, as players can use a Boomerang to kill birds, though if players are hoping to craft a Birdcage they will absolutely need a Bird Trap.

Newer players who do not have constant food sources can rely on Bird Traps as Birds have the chance of dropping a small Morsel, which can be used to cook Meatballs and other Crock Pot items.

If players wish to increase the chance of Birds spawning they will want to craft a Feather Hat.

Players can also speed up the process by placing a Seed in the Bird Trap.

It should be noted that there is a chance a trap will break when a Bird is caught by it, essentially releasing the Bird and wasting a single use of the Bird Trap.

Failed Bird Traps will still be able to be reused if it has not used all of its charges.

Players will have to murder caught Birds if they wish to receive the resources Birds drop, though players should note that this will raise their Naughtiness Meter which has the ability to spawn a Krampus

STRAW ROLL

The Straw Roll can be prototyped by using6 Cut Grassand1 Rope.

Straw Rolls are used for sleeping purposes and can only be used at Dusk and Night in order to skip these phases and gain33 Sanity for the cost of 75 Hunger.

A Player’s temperature will also be set to 15° making it suitable for players to use in Summer and Winter.

InDon’t Starve Together players will gain 0.67 Sanity per second for the cost of 1 Hunger per second, which is important to note as players will not be able to skip the Dusk or Night phase.

Players do not need a Straw Roll in order to progress inDon’t Starve andDon’t Starve Together even if they are in need of Sanity as there are a number of easy items players can access in order to replenish Sanity.

It might be a good idea to prototype a Straw Roll for emergencies, though again this is not a requirement.

BACKPACK

The Backpack requires4 Cut Strawand 4 Twigs to prototype and provide players with a total of 8 extra inventory slots.

Backpacks are a necessity when exploring The Constant and will automatically equip themselves in the player’s Chest Slot if it is available, removing the Armour the player is currently wearing.

As a player will have to use a Chest Slot, players will have to rely on Head Armour in order to protect themselves, or they can be a sneaky-sneaky, like me and install a mod that lets them wear both.

Players will not be able to store Backpacks in Chests, though players may want to have multiple Backpacks with different skins if they wish to have one for each type of exploration they proceed in (ie. a hunting Backpack, a resource Backpack, etc.)

It should be noted that Backpacks are flammable.

COMPASS

The Compass requires 1 Gold Nugget and1 Papyrus to prototype in single-player and 1 Gold Nuggetand1 Flintto craft inDon’t Starve Together (though in DST it does not require a Science Machine).

The Compass is a bit useless for players as all it does is tell a player which direction they are facing, though a player could just look at the mini-map. That being said, a Compass will also reveal another player’s location in DST.

UMBRELLA

The Umbrella requires6 Sticks, 2 Silkand1 Pig Skin to prototype and is one of the best items players can use when it is raining.

The Umbrella will give the player 90% water resistance and can be used as a weapon for 20 uses, though this is not recommended as it only deals 17 damage, though in the DLCs and DST a player will attack with their fist dealing 10 damage instead of using the Umbrella.

The Umbrella has 6 days of durability and will provide players with an insulation factor of 120 during Summer.

HEALING SALVE

The Healing Salve requires2 Ashes,1 Rocks and1 Spider Gland to prototype and is the first real healing item that players will have access to.

Healing Salves provide players with 20 Health upon consumption, though they are outclassed by Honey Poultice a bit later on in the game.

I would recommend crafting yourself a bunch of these early on if you are finding it difficult to survive.

WATER BALLOONS (DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

Water Balloons requires2 Mosquito Sacks and1 Ice to prototype and are used for putting out small fires in the area or for protecting nearby objects from catching on fire for 30 seconds.

If thrown at a player it will reduce their temperature by 5° and will provide them with 20 Wetness.

The only time this won’t happen is if a player has 100% water resistance, causing the Water Balloon to bounce off the player and roll away,

Players can use Water Balloons to wet Mobs in order to deal extra electric damage to them, which comes in extra handy for fighting the Dragonfly.

PILE O’ BALLOONS(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Pile o’ Balloons is a character specific item that requires4 Water Balloons to craft.

Pile o’ Balloons only need to be crafter if Wes has lost his initial one provided upon spawning into The Constant.

SILLY MONKEY BALL(SHIPWRECKED)

The Silly Monkey Ball requires2 Snake Skin,2 Ropes and1 Bananato prototype and can be used to lure Prime Apes so that they are no longer aggressive towards players.

The Silly Monkey Ball has 10 uses are most notable for stopping Prime Apes from picking up items.

ANTI VENOM(SHIPWRECKED)

Anti Venom requires3 Seaweed,2 Coraland1 Venom to prototype and will remove the poison effect on any player who uses it.

Players will not be able to preemptively use Anti Venom in order to protect themselves from poison.

BIRD WHISTLE (HAMLET)

Bird Whistles require3 Platapine Quills,1 Hippopotamoose Antler and1 Flint to prototype and will cause the BFB to appear from the sky.

This is the only way to get to the fourthHamletisland early than usual and at the player’s ease/will.

BUG B’GONE(HAMLET)

Bug B’Gone requires6 Tubers and1 Flytrap Stalk to prototype and is used to kill Gnat Swarms and Rabid Beetles.

It should be noted that players will not be able to kill Gnats with a regular weapon unless they are frozen.

Players can also use Bug B’Gone on Weeolves, Scorpions, Mans and Mosquitos.

It needs to be noted that players will take 5 damage per second if they stay in the Noxious Cloud caused by the Bug B’Gone for too long, though players can wear a Gas Mask to prevent this.

Science Machine | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (4)

FOOD

Food items are items that help provide the player with means of cooking food or planting foods.

BASIC FARM

The Basic Farm requires 8Cut Grass,4 Manure and4 Logs in order to prototype and will allow players to plant seeds in order to obtain crops like Carrots, Corn, Eggplants, Dragon Fruits, Durians, Pomegranates, Watermelons, Sweet Potatoes(SW), Aloe(HAM), Radishes(HAM), Asparagus (DST & HAM), Garlic (DST), Onions (DST), Peppers (DST), Potatoes (DST) and Toma Roots (DST).

Basic Farms require 20 daylight mines for a plant to grow to full size, though players can rely on them for sources of Filler and for Fruits and Veggies that can be used for more complicated recipes.

Basic Farms are fairly useless in the long-run as they are severely outclassed by Improved Farms which produce crops at a faster.

Players can bypass the need of Improved Farms by fuelling the Basic Farm with 4 Manure, 16 Rot/Rotten Eggs or 3 Guano to fully-grow a plant, though player will need less of these resources when they have an Improved Farm.

I personally usually skip prototyping and crafting Basic Farms simply because I’m usually fast enough at crafting an Alchemy Engine in order to prototype an Improved Farm. That doesn’t mean that you have to follow my example as there is absolutely no shame in crafting a Basic Farm early on.

CROCK POT

The Crock Pot requires6 Twigs,6 Charcoal and3 Cut Stoneto prototype.

Quite frankly, the Crock Pot is one of the most important Structures players can craft in all ofDon’t Starve andDon’t Starve Together as Crock Pots are the only way players will have access to any higher tier foods that will be able to feed a player and provide them with a substantial amount of stats.

The Crock Pot will require player to place 4 ingredients in order to craft the food they desire.

Players will want to get used to Crock Pot recipes, especially those for Hunger, Sanity and Health.

It should be noted that if a player attempts a Crock Pot recipe, but it doesn’t exist it will result in Wet Goop.

Players can also use the Crock Pot to “raise the freshness” of their ingredients, though players should note that spoiled ingredients will lower the freshness of the final result of the food.

To find ways of keeping their food fresh, they should check out this article on freshness and spoilage.

BEE BOX

A Bee Box requires4 Bees,2 Boards and1 Honeycomb to prototype and will help provide players with a fairly safe way of collecting Honey.

Players will want to set up a number of Bee Boxes in order to produce a number of healing items including Honey Poultice, Honey Nuggets and Honey Ham.

Honey is one of the best ways to heal yourself, especially if you are playing Wigfrid who can only eat meat.

DRYING RACK

The Drying Rack requires3 Twigs,3 Ropes and2 Charcoal to prototype and is a necessary food station for any base.

Drying Racks can be used to dry out most Meat and Fish, turning them into Jerky, Small Jerky or Monster Jerky depending on their size.

Players will need to hang the dried variants of each type of Meat and will need between 0.25-2 Days for them to dry.

Unlike a Crock Pot, any Foods that are dried will come out with full freshness, allowing players to hold off until a food is about to expire before hanging them.

The following is all the information you need to know about drying racks:

MUSHROOM PLANTER(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Mushroom Planter requires8 Rot,5 Manure and2 Living Logsto prototype and will allow players to place Red Caps, Green Caps, Blue Caps as well as their Spore variants on them in order to produce more Mushrooms.

Mushroom Planters are considered an essential Food object inDon’t Starve Together as players can rely on Mushrooms to gain Sanity.

Players will need to fuel Mushroom Planters with Living Logs every so often, similar to fertilizing a Farm every so often.

Players should note that they will not be able to grow Mushrooms on a Mushroom Planter during Winter similar to Farms, though players can head down to the Caves if they want to farm Mushrooms all year around.

COOKBOOK(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Cookbook requires2 Silk,1 Papyrus and1 Feather Pencilto prototype and keeps a log of all the recipes players have created when using a Crock Pot or Portable Crock Pot.

Players do not need Cookbooks realistically, but for those of you who are a bit forgetful, the Cookbook will be able to let you look back on recipes and what stats they provide players.

MUSSEL STICK(SHIPWRECKED)

The Mussel Stick requires2 Bamboo,1 Vineand1 Seaweed to prototype and can be planted on a Mussel Bed in order to provide a player with 1, 3 or 6 Mussels, depending on how long the player has waited.

The number of Mussels players will receive is indicated by how many Mussels are currently on the Mussel Stick.

Don’t worry Mussel Beds respawn after being consumed, though not always in the same place.

FISH FARM(SHIPWRECKED)

The Fish Farm requires4 Coconuts,2 Silkand 2 Ropesto prototype and need to be stocked with Roe.

Fish Farms will produce Tropical Fish, Purple Groupers, Pierrot Fish and Neon Quattros.

Players are recommended to wait until 6 Fish are shown in the Fish Farm in order to acquire 4 Fish. Farming a Fish Farm before then will consume the Roe for less of a gain.

MUSSEL BED (SHIPWRECKED)

Mussel Beds may be naturally spawning, but players can also artificially create them by using1 Mussel and1 Coral, only being able to plant them in the Shallow Ocean.

SCIENCE

ELECTRICAL DOODAD

The Electrical Doodad requires2 Gold Nuggetsand1 Cut Stoneto prototype.

Electrical Doodads are used to craft a number of other items including the Alchemy Engine, Ice Flingomatics, Endothermic Firepits and many others.

Unlike many of the other Refine items, players will not have to prototype the Electrical Doodad early as they are only really needed for mid-tier items.

ALCHEMY ENGINE

The Alchemy Engine requires6 Gold Nuggets,4 Boards and2 Cut Stone and will provide players with a good amount of crafting recipes.

InDon’t Stave Together (DST),Hamlet (HAM), Reign of Giants (RoG) andShipwrecked (SW) players will need 4 Boards,2 Cut Stoneand2 Electrical Doodads to prototype the Alchemy Engine.

THERMAL MEASURER

The Thermal Measurer requires 2 Boards and2 Gold Nuggetsto prototype and is often useless for players who use the Combined Status mod.

All the Thermal Measurer does is let players know what the ambient temperature is, letting players know when the seasons are changing.

The Thermal Measurer will turn red during Summer, purple when it’s close to Winter and Blue when it’s Winter.

Players may notice the Thermal Measurer changing temperature throughout the day, this is normal as it will depend on how much sun is around.

RAINOMETER

The Rainometer requires2 Boards, 2 Gold Nuggets and 2 Ropes to prototype and is another semi-useless item.

As the name suggests, the Rainometer will tell players when Rain is coming, having three stages: Sunny, Cloudy and Raining.

LIGHTNING ROD

The Lightning Rod requires4 Gold Nuggets and1 Cut Stone to prototype in most versions of Don’t Starve, though single-player base game players will only need 3 Gold Nuggetsand1 Cut Stone.

Lightning Rods provide players with a 40 unit radius (80 unit diameter) of protection from Lightning, which comes in especially useful in Spring.

If players leave their base with no Lightning Rod there is a chance that a nearby object, such as Berry Bushes, Saplings, Grass Tufts or Trees will be struck by lightning, essentially having the chance to ignite into flames, destroying everything that surrounds the flaming object.

Lightning Rods will protect WX-78 players from being struck by Lightning, which may actually be more of a hinderance, simply because the System Overload is a great upgrade.

Players will want to craft Lightning Rods as soon as Winter comes to an end as there is a higher chance of rainfall in Spring.

THINK TANK(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Think Tank requires4 Boards to prototype and is considered the nautical version ofDon’t Starve Together, providing players with the Seafaring Tab which lets players to build boating objects.

CARTOGRAPHER’S DESK(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Cartographer’s Desk requires4 Boards and1 Compass to prototype and will let players access the Cartography Tab which allows them to craft Map Scrolls to grant other players visibility to the part of the maps you have already revealed.

Unfortunately the Cartographer’s Desk doesn’t see much use as most people use a mod to allow players to see where you are standing at any time.

POTTER’S WHEEL(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Potter’s Wheel requires4 Twigs,2 Boards and2 Cut Stone and is a station that provides players access to the Sculpt Tab.

Sculptures are not essential for players as they only provide players with cosmetics based on Chess Pieces and the four main Giants, including the Deerclops, Moose/Goose, Antlion and Bearger.

Players will be able to craft 3 different variants of each type of Sculture including Marble, Cut Stone and Moon Shards.

SEA LAB(SHIPWRECKED)

The Sea Lab requires4 Limestone,2 Sand and2 Electrical Doodadsto craft and works as a tier 2 crafting station that can be placed in the Ocean.

Science Machine | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (6)

FIGHT

Fight items consist of weapons and armour that will help protect players against Mobs.

SPEAR

The Spear requires2 Twigs,1 Rope and2 Flint to prototype and is the first weapon that players will have access to, especially if players do not have access to any stronger crafting stations.

The Spear deals 34 damage per hit and has a durability of 150, meaning that it will reduce by 0.66% per hit.

Players can rely on a Spear for the majority of their damage, though players will want to upgrade from the Spear shortly as there are other weapons that are more powerful that are shortly in range.

LOG SUIT

The Log Suit requires8 Logsand2 Rope to prototype and is the first piece of Armour players will have access to, especially if players do not have access to any stronger crafting stations.

The Log Suit has 450 durability and will absorb 80% of the physical damage dealt to a player, essentially providing players with 600 extra HP if they have the standard 150 HP.

InDon’t Starve Together the Log Suit takes a small cut in durability, being brought down to 315 HP.

The Log Suit can be used for many other crafting recipes including Scalemail(DST & RoG), Obsidian Armour(SW), Cactus Armour(SW) and theMant Suit (HAM).

Log Suits are effective for defending against seasonal giants such as the Deerclops, Moose/Goose, Antlion and Bearger. Not only that, players will also only need a Log Suit to deal with smaller bosses such as Treeguards and the Spider Queen.

Players can also rely on the Log Suit to deal with Krampii and can still use Log Suits for Klaus, though players may need a number of them to get through with no deaths.

BEE MINE

The Bee Mine requires4 Bees,1 Boardand1 Flint to prototype.

In my opinion, Bee Mines are the least useful weapon in the game, requiring players to place it on the ground to arm it and have a Mob walk towards it for it to explode.

Once the Bee Mine explodes it will launch 4 hostile Bees that will begin attacking the Mob, essentially assisting the player with some extra damage, though in reality it’s not very much damage.

Players can use Bee Mines on low-health Mobs, though if players want a distraction for bigger Mobs this may be the thing for you.

I can say I’ve only used the Bee Mine once… yes, you heard me… once.

SLEEP DART

The Sleep Dart requires2 Cut Reeds,1 Stingerand1 Jet Feather to prototype.

Sleep Darts are quite a useful weapon to have in your inventory as they will do as the name suggests, put Mobs to sleep.

Sleep Darts can cause most Mobs to fall asleep as soon as they are targeted, though larger Mobs will require more shots which can be seen here.

Mobs will not take any damage from Sleep Darts, however, players can deal a good amount of damage to Mobs as they wake up.

FIRE DART

Fire Darts require2 Cut Reeds,1 Charcoal and1 Crimson Feather to prototype.

Unlike Sleep Darts, Fire Darts will damage Mobs over time, dealing up to 120 fire damage over time, though players should note that if they kill a Mob using fire damage they will receive a cooked variant of any food drops and Ashes as the the rest of the loot.

Players can successfully destroy Spider Dens using Fire Darts if they do not wish to deal with any of the Spiders that come out of them, though in reality the best use for Fire Darts is to reduce the health of large Mobs, switching to other forms of damage to secure the takedown.

BLOW DART

The Blow Dart requires2 Cut Reeds,1 Hound Tooth and1 Azure Feather to craft and is one of the best types of darts players can craft in all ofDon’t Starve.

Blow Darts deal 100 damage each, being the most useful against big baddies, though players can also use them on enemies like the Koalefant, which annoying runs away from players upon being approached.

ELECTRIC DART(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Electric Dart requires 2 Cut Reeds,1 Gold Nuggetand1 Saffron Feather to prototype.

Electric Darts deal 90 damage per hit or if a mob is wet they will deal 150 damage.

Players should use Electric Darts to kill Volt Goats as this will charge them so they drop Electric Milk.

POISON SPEAR (SHIPWRECKED)

The Poison Spear requires1 Spearand1 Venom Gland to prototype essentially dealing 34 damage to an enemy and poisoning that enemy so it continues to take up to 26 damage,

It should be noted that enemies that have been affected by poison will drop food items that only have 50% freshness.

POISON DART(SHIPWRECKED)

The Poison Dart requires2 Cut Reeds,1 Venom Glandand1 Jet Feather to prototype and will deal 26 damage in total when a Mob is damaged.

Similar to the Poison Spear, if a Mob is killed by a Poison Dart it will drop food items that will only have 50% freshness.

SEASHELL SUIT (SHIPWRECKED)

The Seashell Suit requires10 Seashells, 2 Seaweed and1 Rope to prototype and will absorb 75% of any physical damage players take.

Seashell Suits are most notable when against Poison Snakes, Poison Mosquitoes, Spider Warriors and Yellow Crocodogs as it also prevents the player from being Poisoned.

COCONADE (SHIPWRECKED)

The Coconade requires1 Coconut,1 Gunpowder and1 Ropeto prototype and is a ranged weapon that deals 250 damage upon exploding.

It should be noted that Coconades will destroy Structures and Mobs in a 6 unit radius.

SPEAR GUN (SHIPWRECKED)

The Spar Gun requires3 Bambooand1 Jellyfish to prototype and requires any Spear to deal damage, including the Spear, Poison Spear, Obsidian Spear or Battle Spear.

Players will have to load the Spear Gun by right clicking it and will be able to shoot the Spear to deal 3x the damage.

If players wish to remove the Spear from the Spear Gun they must drop the Spear Gun on the floor.

The Spear Gun has 8 uses and will cause the used Spear to lose 10 uses.

CORK BAT(HAMLET)

The Cork Bat requires 3 Corkand1 Board to prototype and is considered to be a great mid-tier weapon as it deals 51 damage to all Mobs.

Cork Bats only have 20 uses, meaning that players may not want to rely on the Cork Bat, especially as the Cork Bat will cause the player to become stunned for a brief time, essentially meaning that players will not have enough time to escape from fast attacking Mob.

MANT MASK(HAMLET)

The Mant Mask requires5 Chitinand1 Football Helmetto prototype and is considered an essential item for players to craft as with the Mant Suit, players will receive the ability to move amongst Mants without the worry of them becoming aggressive to the player.

It should be noted that players will not be camouflaged from Mant Warriors and similarly players will be attacked by any Mants that they attack.

The Mant Mask has 450 HP and absorbs 80% of the damage dealt and is most notable when players use a low durability Football Helmet to craft it as even if a player uses a 1% durability on it, they will still get a 100% Mant Mask.

MANT SUIT(HAMLET)

The Mant Suit requires5 Chitinand1 Log Suit to prototype and is obviously also considered an essential item as when paired with Mant Mask the player will receive camouflage amongst Mants, other than Mant Warriors.

Similar to the Mant Mask, Mant Suits have 450 HP and provide the player with 80% damage mitigation.

Also similar to the Mant Mask, players can use a low durability Log Suit in order to craft a 100% Mant Mask.

FANCY HELMET(HAMLET)

The Fancy Helmet requires3 Alloyand3 Cork to prototype and provides the player with a 20% movement speed reduction, though players will receive 80% damage mitigation.

The Fancy Helmet has 1,200 HP and is considered a very sturdy piece of Armour for players to wear.

TIN SUIT(HAMLET)

The Tin Suit requires3 Alloyand1 Hammer to prototype and will also reduce a player’s movement speed by 20%.

Tin Suits will provide players with 80% damage mitigation and also have 1,200 HP towards durability, making it a great piece of Armour to have in your toolkit.

Science Machine | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (7)

STRUCTURES

Structures consist of storage space and Structures that provide the player with extra utility.

CHEST

The Chest requires3 Boards to prototype and will provide players with 9 storage slots.

I don’t think I need to explain the use of Chests, but I will say that players will need zones of Chests if they hope to store all of their items, especially when they are in the mid-to-late game.

HAY WALL

The Hay Wall requires4 Cut Grass and2 Twigs to prototype and is the weakest of all walls.

Hay Walls prevent Mobs from passing and are highly flammable.

Hay Walls can also be destroyed during Strong Winds inShipwrecked.

WOOD WALL

The Wood Wall requires2 Boardsand 1 Ropeto prototype and are a fairly useless Structure to build.

Wood Walls can provide players with a good amount of safety, though it should be noted that Wood Walls can be destroyed with fire and inShipwrecked they can be destroyed with Strong Winds.

WOOD FENCE

The Wood Fence requires3 Twigs and1 Ropeto prototype and has no real use other than decoration and perhaps keeping mobs away from them.

As with Wood Walls, Wood Fences have the capability of being burned and unlike Wood Walls, flying Mobs will be able to get over the Wood Fence.

SIGN

The Sign requires1 Board to prototype and is only useful for players who need to mark Chests or for players who need a waypoint on the map.

Signs do not need to be written on by using a Feather Pencil and will allow players to write on the sign inDon’t Starve Together, letting players write directions or whatever they need.

Players will have to click on the sign to have their character read aloud what is written on the sign.

If ignited a character will no longer be able to read the sign.

MINI SIGN

The Mini Sign requires1 Board to prototype.

Unlike the Sign, players will need t ouse a Feather Pencil to write on the Mini Sign and will only be able to draw items that are placed in front of the Mini Sign.

Mini Signs cannot be destroyed with a Hammer and must be picked up using a Shovel.

TACKLE RECEPTACLE(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Tackle Receptacle requires1 Driftwood Piece,1 Bone Shard and1 Electrical Doodadto prototype and provides players with the ability to access the Fishing Tab.

The Fishing Tab will provide players access to Lures, Wooden Ball Bobber as well as the Hardened Slip Bobber.

All other items need to be unlocked using Adverts.

FRIENDLY SCARECROW (DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Friendly Scarecrow requires3 Boards,3 Cut Grass and1 Pumpkinto prototype and will provide players with the ability to attract Canaries instead of Crows.

Players will want a Friendly Scarecrow when venturing into the Caves as Canaries will help provide players with Saffron Feathers and will allow players to spawn the Misery Toadstool.

CRAFTSMERM HOUSE(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Craftsmerm House requires4 Boards,3 Cut Reeds and2 Freshwater Fish to prototype and is a character specific item to Wurt.

Craftsmerm Houses spawn Merms similar to a Pig House, though unlike Pigs, Merms will not head back into their home.

It should be noted that Craftsmerm Houses need to be placed on Marsh Turf.

DIY ROYALTY KIT(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The DIY Royalty Kit is another character specific object for Wurt and requires5 Boardsand 5 Rope to prototype.

The DIY Royalty Kit requires players to upgrade it further in order to make the ROyal Tapestry to spawn in the King of the Merms.

SANDBAG (SHIPWRECKED)

The Sandbag requires3 Sand and2 Cloth to prototype and are used to prevent Flooding, essentially acting as a barricade during Monsoon Season.

SEA CHEST (SHIPWRECKED)

The Sea Chest requires4 Boardsand1 Tar to prototype and acts like a regular Chest, though it can be placed in the Ocean.

SEA WALL(SHIPWRECKED)

The Sea Wall requires4 Seaweed and1 Limestone to prototype and can only be placed in the Ocean.

Similar to all other Walls, they provide a bit of defense against Mobs.

BALLPHIN PALACE (SHIPWRECKED)

The Ballphin Palace requires4 Limestone, 4 Seaweeds and2 Dorsal Fins to prototype and will spawn a Bottlenose Ballphin every 4 days.

CORK BARREL(HAMLET)

The Cork Barrel requires2 Corkand1 Ropeto prototype and provides players with 4 storage slots.

While players may not understand why they would craft a Cork Barrel instead of a Chest, Cork Barrels are great for keeping Pogs out of them as they will not be openable to them.

BEARD HAIR RUG(HAMLET)

The Beard Hair Rug requires1 Beard Hair and1 Cut Grass to prototype and is considered a Turf Item.

Players will not need to use Beard Hair Rugs as they are a purely cosmetic items, though players should note that Lureplants will not be able to grow on them and no Birds will be able to spawn or land on them.

REFINE

Refine items are items that can be used to craft other more intricate items.

ROPE

Rope requires3 Cut Grass to prototype and is required to craft a number of other objects including Hammers, Lanterns, Willow’s Lighter, DIY Royalty Tool Kit, Bug Nets, Piggy Backs, Straw Rolls, Tent, Bundling Wrap, and the list goes on and on.

Players will want to prototype Rope as soon as possible as they will be going through quite a bit of it.

There’s nothing worse than needing Rope and not having the prototype.

BOARDS

Boards require4 Logs to prototype and are required to craft a number of objects including the character specific Sisturn and Winona’s G.E.M.erator. Similarly the list is extensive.

Similar to Ropes, players will want to prototype Boards as soon as possible as they will get through them quite a bit.

There’s nothing worse than needing Boards and not having the prototype.

CUT STONE

Cut Stone require3 Rocks to prototype and are required to craft a number of other objects including Pig Houses, Crock Pots, Endothermic Fire Pits, Electrical Doodads, the Mad Science Lab and the Portable Seasoning Station. Similarly the list goes on.

Similar to both Ropes and Boards, players will want to prototype Cut Stone as soon as possible as they will get through them quite quickly.

There’s also nothing worse than needing Cut Stone and not having the prototype.

PAPYRUS

Papyrus requires4 Cut Reeds to prototype and are required to craft Wickerbottom’s Books, Honey Poultice, Spider Dens, Maxwell’s Codex Umbra, Wigfrid’s songs, and many Dress clothes.

The average player will not need Papyrus until mid-to-late game, however, it’s always a good idea to have this prototyped early, though not a requirement.

BEESWAX

Beeswax requires1 Honeycomb to prototype and is only used for Wax Paper.

In my opinion, Beeswax is one of the silliest craftable recipes as it just creates an extra step for players to get Wax Paper, though undeniably Wax Paper is one of the best items in the game as it will create Bundling Wrap which players can use to keep all their food fresh.

It should be noted that Beeswax has the chance to melt when near a heat source or when it is Summer, so make sure that you place it in a Chest or a Backpack so it doesn’t mysteriously disappear.

WAX PAPER

Wax Paper requires1 Beeswaxand1 Papyrus to prototype.

On its own, Wax Paper has no use, though after players defeat the Bee Queen inDon’t Starve Together or kill enough bees in single-playerDon’t Starve to receive the Bundling Wrap Blueprint, they will be granted indefinite freshness by using Bundling Wrap.

CLOTH (SHIPWRECKED)

Cloth requires3 Bamboo to prototype and is used as a crafting material for Sails, the Life Jacket and other resources in bothShipwreckedandHamlet, the only thing is… it cannot be crafted inHamlet and must be bought or brought over.

Cloth is considered an essential item in the game.

LIMESTONE (SHIPWRECKED)

Limestone requires3 Corals to prototype and can be used to craft a Chimnea, Boats, Sea Yards, the Sea Lab and many otherShipwrecked exclusive items.

Limestone is considered an essential item in the game.

CORAL NUBBIN(SHIPWRECKED)

Coral Nubbin requires3 Limestones and1 Coral Larva to prototype and unlike most other items, it will spoil after 20 days.

Coral Nubbins are used to create new Coral Reefs in the Shallow Ocean.

CLAW PALM SAPLING (HAMLET)

The Claw Palm Sapling requires1 Corkand1 Manureto prototype and provides players with the ability to grow Claw Palm Trees.

As a player would assume, Claw Palm Trees will. be a resource for Cork and the Claw Palm Sapling recipe is one of the only ways to make sure that Cork is renewable.

Science Machine | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (8)

MAGIC

Magic items include crafting stations and items that have magical properties.

PRESTIHATITATOR, PIRATIHATITATOR & HOGUS PORKUSATOR

The Prestihatitator requires4 Rabbits,4 Boards and1 Top Hat to prototype and is considered the first Magic station in the game.

The Prestihatitator provides players with a number of basic Magic and Refine recipes and is required if players wish to get onto the road of building better Weapons and Armour.

InShipwrecked (SW)the Prestihatitator is called the Piratihatitator and will require4 Parrots,4 Boards and1 Top Hat.

InHamlet (HAM)the Prestihatitator is called the Hogus Porkusator. The Hogus Porkusator has the most different crafting recipe, requiring4 Pig Skin,4 Boards and 4 Azure Feathers.

It should be noted that players can use Beardlings instead of Rabbits if they are insane. Both need to be caught using a Trap.

DRESS

Dress items are also reffered to as clothing.

They often provide the player with extra stats or bonus perks.

RABBIT EARMUFFS

Rabbit Earmuffs require2 Rabbits and1 Twig to prototype and are one of the most useless Winter Dress items as they only provide an insulation factor of 60.

Players should avoid crafting Rabbit Earmuffs at all costs as they are costly and do not provide much protection.

It should be noted that Rabbit Earmuffs are always available to craft inDon’t Starve Together.

TOP HAT

The Top Hat requires 6 Silk to prototype and is one of the better Dress items players have access to, especially this early in the game,.

The Top Hat provides players with 3.3 Sanity per minute and 20% water resistance.

Top Hats are also used to craft the Prestihatitator and have 8 days of durability.

BEEFALO HAT

The Beefalo Hat requires8 Beefalo Wooland1 Beefalo Horn to prototype.

The Beefalo Hat is a necessary item for players to survive Winter as it provides players with an insulation factor of 240.

Players will also receive 20% water resistance when wearing a Beefalo Hat and will be able to avoid being attacked by Beefalo during mating season, which often occurs in Spring.

Unfortunately, the Beefalo Hat is a bit difficult to obtain as it requires killing a Beefalo, though players can use friendly Mobs to help them secure a takedown.

FASHION MELON(REIGN OF GIANTS & SHIPWRECKED)

The Fashion Melon requires 3 Twigs and 1 Watermelonto prototype and isn’t the most useful item for players to craft unless they are desperately in need of getting cool.

Fashion Melons provide players with 120 insulation points, cooling players by 55° for the cost of Wetness up to a maximum of 33% and the loss of Sanity by 2 per minute.

The Fashion Melon rots in 3 days and WX-78 players will take between 6-10 damage every minute.

Oddly enough, the Fashion Melon will also prevent players from freezing in Winter when in single-playerReign of Giants, but not inDon’t Starve Together.

SHARK TOOTH CROWN(SHIPWRECKED)

Shark Tooth Crowns require5 Hound’s Toothand1 Gold Nugget to prototype and will provide players with 6.6 Sanity per minute when a player is on a boat.

The Shark Tooth Crown has a durability of 9 days.

TAR SUIT (SHIPWRECKED)

The Tar Suit requires4 Tar,2 Palm Leavesand2 Cloth to prototype and provides players with 100% wetness resistance for 1 day.

SNAKESKIN JACKET(SHIPWRECKED & HAMLET)

The Snakeskin Jacket requires2 Snake Skinm2 Vines and2 Bone Shards to prototype in bothShipwrecked and Hamlet and acts as the Raincoat in both versions.

As the Snakeskin Jacket acts as a Raincoat, players will gain 70% wetness resistance and will also be protected from Lightning and even Jellyfish electrocution.

Not only that, players will have an insulation factor of 60, allowing them to stay warm a bit longer in the cold.

Science Machine | Don't Starve & DST Guide - Basically Average (9)

ITEMS TO PROTOTYPE AND CRAFT IMMEDIATELY UPON MAKING A SCIENCE MACHINE

While players will have personal preferences on what items they prototype first, I strongly recommend prototyping the following items in order.

My main reason for these choices is their use and how frustrating it can be to advance in theDon’t Starvereality without them. Meaning, how frustrating it can be to actually need them and not be able craft them outside of your base:

Rope

Cut Stone

Boards

Backpack

Shovel

Spear

Log Suit

Hammer

Crock Pot

Drying Rack

Bird Trap

Chest

Bee Box

Beefalo Hat
