Synopsis
Four ordinary women, inflicted by silly societal norms, have to steal, lie, cheat and hide in order to lead the lives that they rightfully deserve.

Lipstick Under My Burkha effectively uses humor to address the issues that affect women every day of their lives. Many moments are hilarious while others are deeply upsetting, but they all ring true in the end, even when the plot gets a little ridiculous. Some structural issues throughout are hard to overlook, as four narratives are tossed around without any real sense of rhythm, but the finale brings it all together in a way that feels effortless. What it lacks in technical strength, it more than makes up for in heart. All four of these women are compelling with various passions and insecurities, and it makes for a very wonderful watch. It's always great to see films from perspectives we so rarely gain access to.

Yesssssssss.
It is your duty to see any film that was originally banned for being "lady oriented".

Bollywood & Indian cinema mini-challenge 2017: Censorship & Controversy (June theme)
Censorship struggles are common in Indian cinema, but this film had a particularly difficult journey. Initially, it was completely denied release. As part of the explanation of their decision, the censorship board wrote: “The story is lady-oriented, their fantasy above life”.
More explicit sexual content than what's in the film has been passed by the censors before, so there's no doubt that it's the portrayal of sex from a female perspective that offended the censorship board. The film goes far enough in this that it feels unusual even in a Western context.
But what surprised me the most is how relevant it felt to me, even as a woman who lives… -

Seemed to be lacking in direction. It does a good job of capturing the reality of the lives of the characters, but it seems to end there and doesn't go anywhere. Though it's entertaining to watch, it falls flat in the last third act despite making many promises.

Lipstick Under My Burkha spoke so much about women in daily basis! Served the audience with 4 point of views of women and revealed the struggles of being women in patriarchal environment. I love every stories and how the storyline engaged me deeply, since I am a woman, too.
It's about dreams of women and how society break every pieces of them. It's about courage to fight for rights and equality. It's about women that spoke so loud.
It's this word for me: empowering.

Rather late but finally watched Lipstick under my Burkha by Alankrita Shrivastava. Such a brilliant film but heavily underrated :'). Kudos to the Women who played the lead roles bravely & the Producer, Filmmaker who dared to make this film. RESPECT!

–How come I never noticed you before? Were you hiding under a burkha?
–Exactly! I've taken it off now.An important, powerful and universal story about women breaking free of their chains. We need more films like this.
